Goal: Foster Service to the Community in Middle School Youth
Email:
What is Kids About Town? KAT is a holistic program that engages the natural energy and enthusiasm of middle school students. It provides them a safe space to have fun together and learn about community mindedness, while rooting them in our local context of Marin County. Why Participate in KAT? Kids About Town is designed to be a significant building block in developing community leadership among young people. Participants are presented with a variety of opportunities to increase their awareness about issues affecting our county and participate in community improvement projects. Our motto is: Leave it Better than You Found it! Ultimately, KAT not only provides a safe place for youth to come together as friends, but as they build relationships with each other and civic leaders, the youth share in and experience a deepening self-confidence. KAT is open to all 6th, 7th, and 8th graders in the greater Ross Valley area (Fairfax, Sleepy Hollow, San Anselmo, and San Rafael, CA). Our program offers a natural graduation for rising 9th graders to pre-register and participate in our annual Mexico Mission Project, a Sleepy Hollow tradition. Kids About Town Activities:- This is one of our early kick-off events for the year, where participants begin to get to know each other. Local Eating Dinner - A local chef leads us in preparing a meal made up entirely of locally grown, fresh, organic ingredients. We do all the cooking and then eat our final product. Dinner is followed by homemade ice cream. We learn that our food choices impact our community. A favorite, this event is fun and builds camaraderie. On the bus ride to and from the East Bay and the pizza parlor following laser tag, we discuss caring for people and the environment. Clean-up Projects - Stinson Beach and Corte Madera Creek, Bingo Fundraiser - Every year, we raise funds for either a global or local charity; these have included sending water filtration straws to Sudan as well as local projects such as helping teens overcome homelessness. Karaoke dance & night hike - fun and group building!
